On Becoming Karl Lagerfeld — Literally

Hulu

Brühl went on to tell us he was truly captivated by the premise and the script, which was written by creators Raphaëlle Bacqué, Jennifer HaveIsaure, and HaveIsaure Pisani-Ferry. “I was extremely pleased and something in me, even before reading the scripts actually, just the idea that to play Karl Lagerfeld triggered me and thrilled me.

“There is something in trying constantly because there is love.” He also praised the show’s writing, noting:

“It was such a relief and a joy for me to get on set. I think that the musical numbers do a really good job of allowing the story to progress, though. My first day was [the scene] when Jacques and Karl actually meet… and I was like, ‘Oh, OK, great,’ because I can fall in love with Daniel, and I can just look at him and believe everything and be present and be there.

“And yeah, this love story, I mean, it's not an easy one. I was terrified of that because I had to stretch and allow this sadistic quality to him. They’re not qualities that are enjoyable, sadism and violence, but they are part of us. I’ve been keeping up with you since On Becoming a God in Central Florida and it’s been fun to see your rise.

PELLERIN: Thank you, Matt.

A tortuous gay love story vies for attention against a glossy backdrop of high fashion in 1972 Paris in Becoming Karl Lagerfeld. I love Eliza Hittman. Even though Jacques has his fair share of lovers, including Yves Saint Laurent at one point, the two remain eerily committed to each other.

Shows to Watch if You Love Fashion

Wardrobe is important in any TV show, but some really wow us with their fashion.

That’s all that matters when you’re acting, a partner that you can listen to and enjoy listening to.

JACOBS: When you first started, did you aspire to a career beyond Canada?

PELLERIN: Yeah, of course. Ultimately, the two men reach some kind of “arrangement,” but their dysfunction only grows. It's toxic. Do people call you Theo?

PELLERIN: Yes, Theo, Theodore, all of that.

JACOBS: Well, this is a huge year for you, or so it seems.

De Bascher was an ambitious hunk who had his eyes on Lagerfeld. Everybody in Germany has such strong opinions about Karl Lagerfeld so to put that all aside and… to find, step by step, the character and find the truth and make it yours… this is a wonderful gift when it comes. It's full of hurdles. She’s such a great actress. I wasn’t really ready for that.

I love working almost constantly, but I always want it to be something that I’m excited about doing.

JACOBS: And you got to be slapped in the face by Kirsten Dunst.

PELLERIN: Slapped in the face, choked, put her fingers in my mouth. That extreme satirical femininity had to feel natural as well, though.
