Stranger Things 5 star Maya Hawke discusses Robin's friendship with Will (Noah Schnapp), and Robin helping him along his LGBTQ journey.

The final season of Stranger Things is largely defined by Will Byers' (Noah Schnapp) journey of self-discovery, from tapping into his link with Vecna (Jamie Campbell Bower) to help his loved ones in danger, to the intimidating experience of growing up in his own skin with unresolved feelings for his best friend, Mike (Finn Wolfhard), closeted before finally coming out to his loved ones in part two's finale "The Bridge." While he's not the first major character to come out in the Duffers' series, that distinction goes to Maya Hawke's Robin Buckley, who was introduced in season three as she came out to Steve Harrington (Joe Keery), as he mistook her pouring her soul as mutual feelings toward him.

Those speculations seemed to be confirmed, though never explicitly stated, in Season 4 when Will breaks down trying to profess his feelings toward Mike.

Although Will identifies the countless ways he is like his friends (the games, movies, and food they like, etc.), he explains that he doesn't like girls.

Will doesn't explicitly say the word gay, but it's abundantly clear not only in his explanation that he doesn't like girls the way his friends do, but also due to his reference to having a crush on someone while looking at Mike, that he's coming out.

This is a plot that has been building for some time, with Will increasingly struggling to watch Mike and Eleven/Jane's relationship and his conversations with Robin about how to take that leap or read the signs the way that Robin did with her now-girlfriend Vickie.

I think he just felt more comfortable phrasing it that way. At first, when the Duffers first told me, I was like, 'No, but I'm a new character. Shawn Levy told us that the reactions on camera were genuine. Now, we spent the whole season together, and she’s part of my little “Stranger Things” family.

Lastly, you had the ability to collaborate with younger actors this season.

From there, Eleven can hopefully use her powers to hijack Vecna's mind while in the Upside Down's version of Hawkins Lab.

Whereas Max can help guide El into Vecna's mind, considering her experiences from within his mindscape, Kali plans to use her own powers to piggyback into Vecna's mind with her sister. While Will's abilities could be a game-changer, many of the others are still stuck in the Upside Down, while the rest of the Party tries to gain intel as they regroup.

Stranger Things season 5, Volume 1's ending also featured Kali's return, and Volume 2 sees her escape the Upside Down military base with Eleven and Hopper.

These characters together move me so much.' Robin is kind of like mentoring Will in some ways through this season, or really just like trying to see if she could help him start to hear his own voice and start to feel okay with himself."

Hawke drew from personal experience about fitting in, "And I really feel like…life is so lonely sometimes.

There were so many different choices in the different takes. It’s nice to play that side of him, and not just play someone who’s always walked all over. It would just be plain saying the lines out loud with no emotion, just to sink it in. It was perfect.

Hopper, of course, already has a bomb, though it adds a very dangerous layer to the group's risky plan.

To nobody's surprise, Eleven is a critical aspect of the Party's plan. This relationship between Robin and Will is kind of about letting people know that if you look hard in a room, you'll find someone who understands you there, find someone you're safe with and that you can trust and that you can talk to and that wants you to find a way to be your full self." The finale releases in theatres and on Netflix on New Year's Eve.
