Invincible’s LGBTQ character is “essential,” creator says

For those semi-exhausted by Disney’s endless MCU content or the ceaseless fan pleas for Warner Bros.

It leads to funny moments, like one scene where he rushes to come back home after leaving his crush Amber hanging in his bedroom, but almost forgets to change back into normal clothes. I know many, many people who are in the LGBT community and representation matters. Nevertheless, the comics contain enough material for the Amazon show to last seven seasons, according to Invincible’s creator Robert Kirkman.

The show is crammed full of immediately recognizable archetypes that, at first blush, appear to be satirizing the format. “Marvel Comics has their Squadron Supreme, which is an archetype of the Justice League. We want the audience to feel comfortable in our universe, to feel like they know our universe. Visit www.amazon.com/amazon-video.

How Invincible's TV Show Fails William Clockwell & LGBTQ Fans

Amazon Prime’s new show, Invincible, removes the coming-out story of the title character’s best friend, William Clockwell — robbing the audience of some much-needed queer representation and storylines.

Once we’ve established that, we then start breaking the toys, moving into new territory, and telling different stories. If that relationship reads as superfluous, it was, because much of their coupling felt less romantic and more as a means to make Mark jealous. Aside from the #MarkEve of it all, fans are voicing their appreciation online for the show continuing its winning streak of adapting the comic’s female characters, like Eve, Amanda, and Debbie Grayson, beyond using their experiences to further Mark’s character development.

Although Mark and Eve’s relationship in the Prime Video show carries the unique burden of the Invincible fandom’s criticism for relegating the disposable Black girlfriend trope—with their relationship serving as a placeholder for future relationships through its race-swapped Amber—the show has continued to adapt Kirkman’s comic with great care.

Invincible Spared Fans From the Comic’s Road Bump of a Love Story

As far as comic book adaptations go, Invincible has been firing on all cylinders adapting Robert Kirkman‘s popular series for television. When Mark and Amber break up following Anissa’s life-threatening attack, Eve, with the grace of a bull in a china shop, busts into Mark’s dorm and asks if he’s gonna ask her out.

In the first episode, “It’s About Time,” he tells Mark he thinks Omni-Man is “hot and all,” without knowing the superhero is really his friend’s father. The adult animated series recently concluded its first eight-episode season (it’s been renewed for two more), and is as addictive as it is satisfying.

Without spoiling anything, Invincible tells the story of Mark Greyson (Steven Yeun), the 17-year-old offspring of alien superhero Omni-Man (a magnificent J.K.

Simmons) and his Earth-born wife (Sandra Oh). When Mark comes of age, so do his superpowers, and the narrative follows him as he struggles to balance life as a teenage high school senior and potential world savior. Based on the popular comics by Robert Kirkman, Invincible follows Mark Grayson, a young superhero who inherited his powers from his dad, a Superman-like alien named Omni-Man.

While the Amazon Prime Video adaptation does remove this arc, Invincible hasn’t totally ignored the character’s LGTBQ identity since William appears to already be out. Time will tell whether the show will maintain its momentum by depicting nuanced and mature storytelling with its ensemble’s interpersonal relationships as it marches toward its season finale on March 13 and beyond with its fourth season.

The two wouldn’t date long, though things took a turn for the worse when Eve’s jealousy over Mark and Amber’s relationship culminated in a spontaneous kiss between her and Mark right after Langstrom made his return.

In the comics, this occurs after Eve invites Mark and Amber to Africa after she retires from heroing. to #restorethesnyderverse, Amazon has a refreshing breakaway: Invincible (★★★★★).

“There are a lot of different stories that come from his sexuality that will be worked into the series.” Including the character in the comics in 2003 was instinctive for Kirkman. While the former has yet to resolve themselves completely, the latter managed to eek its way toward progress as he and Atom Eve finally became a couple.
