Later, she saw them move a plastic container into the kitchen as well. An earlier report made on March 31 gave police an idea as to who was responsible.

When asked by LaToya’s lawyer, James Bullard, if she was sad Martre was dead, she replied, “No.”

However, the jury was not convinced and convicted both Denise Gay and LaToya Gay of first-degree murder.

Who Are Denise and LaToya Gay?

After Martre lost his mother in 2014, his father, Maurice, started dating his co-worker, Denise Gay. Eventually, she moved into Maurice’s home along with her younger daughter, 9-year-old Alana.

Martre, a teenage art student, was reported missing in April 2017. A few years later, things were looking up for him when he heard back from a university in Florida regarding his application to their art school.

In March 2017, Martre received a letter from the university inviting him over for a visit.

The prosecution’s star witness was Alana, who testified that she heard Martre cry out while at home, and when she looked in his room, she saw Denise and LaToya sitting on top of him, holding him down. So, they were tried separately, with Denise being convicted of first-degree murder in April 2018 and LaToya being found guilty of the same offense later in the year.

Martre’s two sisters wanted to file a missing person report, but their father felt it was too early. On March 12, he was supposed to travel to Florida but was never heard from again. Coles’ murder was believed to have happened on March 12.

Prosecutors say Denise Gay led a calculated plot to kill Coles, her boyfriend’s son, with the help of her daughter LaToya.

As one of three cases featured, the show details how the authorities were able to uncover a plot to kill the teenager and how testimony from a 13-year-old sealed Denise and LaToya’s fates. Furthermore, the detectives learned that the emails that Martre received from the university were fake and were traced back to Denise.

The cops also learned that before the murder, Denise had searched online for terms: “Find something that works like chloroform” and “how long it takes to suffocate someone with duct tape.”

The case was significantly aided by Denise’s second daughter, an unnamed 12-year-old, who told the cops she had seen her mom and sister attack Martre and suffocate him with a plaster mask he was making as part of an art project.

The killers were unaware that the cops had already found the body, and the deputies were waiting for Denise at the dumping ground when she turned up with a shovel. In July 2018, Denise was sentenced to life in prison. This ploy worked because the killer was captured on camera, and the person was confirmed to be Denise.

Investigation Discovery’s ‘Deadly Women: Dangerous Liaisons’ delves into Martre’s murder at the hands of Denise Monique Gay and her daughter, LaToya Shantice Gay, in March 2017.

The witness later told a court that she had peeked into Martre’s bedroom and “could see his feet moving; they were like kicking up.” She then said Denise saw her and shooed her away.

His cause of death was reported as asphyxiation.

During Denise’s trial, Henrico Commonwealth’s Attorney Shannon Taylor suggested the theory that Gay and her daughter may have killed Coles in order to get closer to his father.

An autopsy confirmed that the cause of death was asphyxiation.

She said that she saw plaster on his head. Denise was sentenced to life in prison, and LaToya received 30 years. It is unclear why she wanted the 19-year-old Martre dead, but the prosecution speculated she may have thought the murder would bring her closer to the victim’s father. About three weeks later, on April 2, a passerby in a wooded area outside Henrico made a terrible discovery.

The passerby found Martre in a storage container with his arms tied behind his back.
